At the idyllic Freibergsee lake
On reaching the lake, follow the right-hand shore path to the Heini Klopfer ski flying hill, one of the world’s largest facilities of its kind. From here, you can choose to extend the hike along a leisurely and varied stretch past Schwand and the Stillachtal valley. Alternatively, turn left for the shortest route back to Oberstdorf via two trails. Taking the lower path here is the only way to descend to the picturesque lake shore.
A varied and multi-faceted return route
On the north-easterly-most edge of the Freibergsee lake, a slightly steeper but well-maintained forest trail leads to the lower Renksteg from where sunny meadow paths with plenty of great views take you back to Oberstdorf. If you extended the hike to visit the Stillachtal valley, you can now also get to the lower Renksteg via the Stillach’s riverside trails. On reaching the Zimmeroybrücke bridge it is also possible to incorporate several more sights by returning via the Ried stadium and the Loretto chapels.
Useful info
Bypass the steepest ascents or descents of the day by taking the bus to the Söllereckbahn valley station or enjoying a leisurely trip on the hillside lift up the Heini Klopfer ski flying hill. The route can also be shortened by taking advantage of the bus stops in the Stillachtal valley.
