Length: 3.7 km Elevation gain/loss: 189 m
Duration: 2 hours
The route begins with a dark, damp and relatively busy section along a raging river – and ends in a remote, picturesque setting with plenty of sunshine. There are few more varied hikes than this!
After passing the ticket office, the circular hike starts out on a well-developed path with safety railings through the impressive Breitachklamm ravine, where the Breitach’s water has been tunnelling its way through the Engenkopf’s limestone massif for some 10,000 years. There are few places where the power of water can be felt more vividly than here, deep down in the thundering ravine! To leave the ravine, the path at the upper entrance leads up a short, somewhat steeper section of stone steps to the upper ticket office.
Not far from the entrance, the Zwingsteg bridge leads over the ravine at a dizzying height. The breathtaking view into the plummeting depths below should not be missed. On reaching the far side, a manageable climb takes you up to the Engenkopf from where the shorter version of the circular hike follows a well-developed road back to Tiefenbach. The spectacular view of the Oberstdorf mountains can now be enjoyed from the midst of sunny meadows of flowers.
