Before traveling, you should examine your four-legged friends and make sure all their vaccinations are up to date. Note: some countries require an official veterinary certificate for dogs to be allowed to travel.
Dogs need time to get used to change. The following measures can help your dog do this:
• Feed your dog familiar food
• Stick to a familiar routine
• Do not leave your dog alone for too long
• Increase the amount of unusual activity slowly to avoid overstraining your dog
• Climate change – increase the amount of time spent outdoors gradually
• No pre-holiday haircuts – fur regulates dogs’ temperatures and protects them from sunburn
As naturally active animals, dogs love easy hikes and walks with their “pack”.
• Let dogs run freely (where permitted) or put them on a loose lead so they can set their own pace
• Allow plenty of breaks on long walks!
• Do not forget food or water
All of the hiking trails in and around Oberstdorf are ideal for hiking and dog walking. Some of the mountain huts even allow dogs overnight. Use the directory to find the best landlord before setting off. The huts are generally open from mid-June to mid-October. You and your dog should ideally have mountain experience and not suffer from vertigo. You need sturdy footwear and suitable mountain equipment.
Cycling tours
Cycling tours should be tailored to your dog’s health. Avoid rides in the midday heat and take your dog’s health into consideration regardless of your speed.
• Try to avoid busy routes and stick to trails and low-traffic roads
• Always keep your dog on the side away from the road
In the snow
Almost all dogs love the snow. The fresh winter air strengthens their immune system and stimulates circulation. Older dogs can behave like young dogs again and become full of energy.
• Avoid ice and deep snow
• Your dog should not eat the snow; it can cause diarrhoea or inflammation of the stomach and bowels
• Regularly remove large lumps of snow from the paws and fur
• Remove grit from your dog’s feet and rinse off road salt with warm water
• Apply paw balm to your dog’s paws to prevent them from cracking
