This day trip begins with a leisurely bus ride to the Renksteg, from where a well-maintained hiking trail leads through the idyllic forest to the Freibergsee lake. On beautiful summer days, the Freibergsee natural swimming pool invites you to cool off for a while. The spacious lakeside lawn offers plenty of space to play, relax and picnic. Alternatively, hire a rowing boat or pedalo and head out onto the lake with your family. If you look to the end of the lake, you’ll already be able to see your next destination towering above the trees in the forest: the Heini Klopfer ski flying hill.
Good fitness is a must for this day trip. The hiking trail starts at the Mühlenbrücke bridge by the Nebelhornbahn valley station and heads towards the Trettachtal valley. Shortly after the Riefenkopf mountain restaurant, the route branches off to the left into the Hölltobel ravine. This is a special natural spectacle. The viewing platform that looks out onto one of the two large waterfalls, where the water from the Dietersbach river plunges into the depths below, is particularly impressive. Those who are not so good on their feet can turn off shortly before this and choose to ascend on the road.
On arriving in Gerstruben, you can take a break to relax and explore a little. The wooden houses were built up to 500 years ago and offer the perfect setting for a brief journey back in time. Take a look in through the windows. Can you see how the former residents used to live?
Have you always wondered how people used to live? Then visit one of the old houses in Gerstruben. A small museum has been lovingly set up in the “Jakobe-Hüs”. This is open from 1 p.m to 4 p.m. every Thursday from May to October.
The descent takes you along the Rautweg trail to Spielmannsau, where you’re awaited by many animals such as sheep, chickens and ponies, to name but a few. There is also a large playground. Depending how much energy you still have, you can either walk back along the Trettach to the Mühlenbrücke bridge where you started or take the more leisurely option of travelling back to Oberstdorf on the mountain climbers’ bus line.
